Salt consumption is commonly associated with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disorders. However, the results of a new study in China have revealed the tangible benefits of reducing salt intake. According to the study, a reduction of just 1 gram in daily per capita salt consumption in China could prevent approximately 9 million heart attack and stroke cases by 2030. It is noted that four million of these cases could result in death.
The current salt consumption in China is around an average of 11 grams per day. The World Health Organization recommends 5 grams of salt per day for daily consumption. The study presents potential strategies to achieve this target. The situation is similar in Turkey. According to the Ministry of Health, the average salt consumption in Turkey is 9.9 grams per day. This amount is nearly double the recommended limits.
High salt consumption negatively affects not only heart and vascular health but also kidneys and certain types of cancer. The increase in consumption of processed and ready-to-eat foods exacerbates this problem. This study emphasizes the necessity of reducing salt consumption worldwide and provides important data for health policies. This study has been published in the BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, an important resource in the field of health.
