Indonesia has banned the sale and use of technology giant Apple’s latest products, iPhone 16 and Apple Watch 10. Apple had previously committed to investing $109 million in local R&D in Indonesia. However, due to the company’s failure to fulfill this promise, the Indonesian government has blocked the IMEI certificates of the devices, implementing this ban. Indonesian Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, stated that any iPhone 16 used in the country is illegal and urged citizens to report such devices to the authorities.

Special Exemptions for Tourists and Airline Workers

Tourists and airline workers are exempt from this ban, with the condition that they can bring and use up to two iPhone 16s into the country. However, the sale of these devices to the local public is prohibited. According to Indonesian laws, foreign companies must produce at least 40% of their products locally to operate in the country. This rule affects not only technology companies like Apple but also other tech giants like Samsung.

With a population of 280 million, this ban represents a significant market, and could be lifted if Apple increases its investments. This situation holds great importance for Apple’s future in the Indonesian market.
