Soccer, with its dynamic nature and constantly changing rules, often makes headlines. One of the most debated rules is the offside rule. Technology is used to ensure accurate detections. For this purpose, a new step was taken in the English Premier League. The league chose the iPhone 14 to make more effective use of the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system. The system, developed by Genius and called ‘Dragon’, aims to increase the accuracy of critical decisions such as offsides during matches. The system envisions placing at least 28 iPhone 14s in every stadium. These devices will record the game and player positions from every angle throughout the match.

Dragon System Revolutionizes Offside Detections

The Dragon system attracts attention with its automatic detection capability. It can identify significant moments during the game and temporarily enhance the quality of the cameras’ footage, then compresses and stores the images back into the system. According to claims, the system can detect players at 7 to 10 thousand different points during a match. The high frame rate of the iPhone, capable of shooting up to 50 frames per second, ensures more accurate detections. These technological innovations will allow VAR to make faster and more accurate decisions, thus minimizing disruptions to the flow of the game.
