Apple continues to take significant steps to bring its technology ecosystem under its own control. According to reports by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple continues to invest billions to develop its own modems for its devices. This development is part of Apple‘s long-standing effort to end its reliance on Qualcomm modems. Since 2018, when Apple began developing its own modems, it appears that it has not yet been able to significantly outperform Qualcomm models.
Apple Strives for Technological Integrity
According to Gurman, Apple‘s development of its own modems will not provide significant benefits to current Apple devices. The performance of Qualcomm models is already very high and surpasses other competitors in the market. The primary motivation for Apple‘s investment is thought to be increasing technological independence and equipping its devices with components it has manufactured entirely on its own. Additionally, Apple is also planning to work on a unified chip that manages wireless functions.
However, Apple‘s modem development process has also faced some challenges. Despite a six-year development period, Apple modems are still experiencing performance and heating problems. This situation does not seem to create as positive an impact as the transition to its own M series processors. Unlike the lower power consumption and high performance provided by ARM processors, the expected improvements in modems have not yet been achievable. As a result, whether Apple uses its own modems or not will not make a significant difference in the daily user experience.
