Tokyo-based electronics and chemistry company TDK Corp. has made a groundbreaking development in the field of solid-state batteries. The company announced that it has developed a material with an energy density of 1,000 Wh/L, offering approximately 100 times more energy density than current technologies in its new generation batteries named CeraCharge. This new battery technology is specifically designed for use in devices that use button cells, such as wireless earbuds, hearing aids, and smartwatches.

Apple Watch Can Be Used for Days on a Single Charge

TDK’s high-energy density battery technology, using oxide-based solid electrolytes and lithium-alloy anodes, enhances safety levels. These features allow the batteries to be safely used in devices that come into direct contact with the human body. At the same time, they are designed to replace single-use button cells with rechargeable batteries, in compliance with EU battery regulations, thus reducing environmental impacts.

CeraCharge technology is expected to be used in products from major technology companies like Apple, which could enable devices like AirPods to be used for weeks on a single charge. TDK aims to start mass production of these new batteries as soon as possible and also plans to expand the operating temperature range with multi-layer lamination technology. This will lead to safer, high-performance batteries with longer usage times and broader application areas being introduced to the market.
