Microsoft has been fined $242 million in a lawsuit brought by IPA Technologies alleging unauthorized use of voice recognition technology. According to this allegation, Microsoft used IPA’s technology without permission during the development of Cortana. Microsoft, on the other hand, has denied the allegations since 2018, arguing that they have not committed any infringement. However, these defenses were not enough to save the company from punishment.

IPA Technologies has filed similar lawsuits against Amazon and Google in the past. Amazon was cleared in this case, but the case with Google is still ongoing. ‘We firmly believe we did not infringe the patent and will appeal the decision,’ a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. While the outcome of Microsoft’s appeal remains unclear, the case has created a significant resonance in the technology world.
