Jonathan James was born on December 12, 1983, in Florida. His father was a computer programmer, and James discovered his interest in technology at an early age, which led him to the world of cybercrime. At just 13, he hacked his school’s network to change his grades. James advanced his skills, joining hacker communities and became known by the pseudonym ‘c0mrade‘.
James Stepped into the Computer World at a Young Age
At the age of 15, James made his mark in the cybersecurity world, directing his curiosity towards bigger targets and successfully infiltrated the systems of the American Department of Defense and NASA in 1999. He hacked the DTRA division of the Department of Defense, accessing thousands of messages and user information. His NASA hack allowed him access to confidential information pertaining to the International Space Station.
James Became Part of Hacker Communities at a Young Age
However, James’s activities led to legal issues. In 2000, at just 17, his home was raided and he was tried for multiple charges. As a minor, he was sentenced to house arrest and probation, and was banned from using the internet. However, during this period, drug tests came back positive and he was sent to a correctional facility.
James’s Hacking Career: Targeted the Department of Defense and NASA
In 2008, he was alleged to have been involved in a major computer system attack on TJX Companies. However, James denied any involvement in the attack and expressed his loss of faith in the justice system. Consequently, in May of the same year, James committed suicide. The suicide note found beside him stated, “I had nothing to do with TJX. I had no faith in the justice system. I lost control and the only way to regain control was this.”
James’s story is a tragic example of the achievements at a young age and the subsequent difficulties he faced, securing his place in cybersecurity history. His life showcases how striking the capabilities in the cyber world and the challenges faced can be.
