In the electric car market, prices are becoming increasingly accessible. This situation has made developing affordable electric city cars a target for many manufacturers. Under the Renault-Mitsubishi-Nissan alliance, Nissan will develop a new vehicle in this segment together with Renault’s Ampere unit. Last month, Renault’s new Twingo model on the same platform also took its final shape.
Initially, Renault planned to collaborate with Volkswagen for the Twingo project. However, when the two companies parted ways, a solution based entirely on Renault’s infrastructure became suitable for Nissan as well. Nissan CEO Makato Uchida states that the new model will be both attractive and budget-friendly.
Ampere Will Also Work for Mitsubishi
The Ampere team will not only develop Nissan’s electric city car but also support an SUV to be released under the Mitsubishi brand. It is not yet clear whether the car Nissan is developing will be a completely new model or a transformation of an existing one. However, the company is still working on the Micra. Renault CEO Luca De Meo states that the project is progressing in line with the schedule and budget.
Nissan’s new model will most likely be produced at the Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia. Nissan has promised to produce 150,000 vehicles annually at this factory.
