The origin of the ‘0‘ digit’s position in the keyboard layout dates back to the QWERTY keyboard layout invented by Christopher Latham Sholes in 1868. The first mechanical typewriters used the letters ‘O‘ and ‘I’ instead of the digits ‘0‘ and ‘1’ to reduce costs. This helped decrease the number of keys and consequently, the production costs.
Even after the ‘0‘ and ‘1’ keys were added to keyboards, the tradition of ‘0‘ being at the end continued. This arrangement facilitates users to write and calculate numbers quickly and logically.
It Was the Most Logical Choice
Ergonomically, having the ‘0‘ digit on the far right of the keyboard allows easy access to other numbers with the little finger of the right hand. This historical and functional reason continues to place the ‘0‘ digit at the end of keyboards today. This placement respects both tradition and user experience.
